Record Turnout at Childers Cup

Record Turnout at Childers Cup

The cool fine weather and good shooting conditions set the tone for the Childers Cup held on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June at the Isis District Rifle Range with a record attendance of 47 shooters and 146 nominations.

This was the 7th Childers Cup shoot and the first time air pistol and air rifle were included in the program. Our new air shed was opened on the 31st of October last year and club members have been using it ever since. The club recently acquired some air rifles and air pistols and this has created a lot of interest from club members and new shooters to come and try.

This year’s competition attracted shooters from local clubs Childers, Maryborough, South Kolan, Mundubbera, Bundaberg and Gympie as well as Brisbane, Toowoomba and Lismore.

There were some PB’s recorded including a first ever silhouette 40 shot by young Riley Hammelswang from South Kolan. John Wooldridge was also on his game winning the overall benchrest and taking home papers to acquire a brand new air rifle – first prize for the air rifle novice match sponsored by Qld Gun Exchange and Pro-Tactical.

The camp fire was well attended as usual thanks to Kym for the huge supply of wood. On Saturday night Matt Murillo from Gympie entertained us with his antique record player and some old Slim Dusty and Chad Morgan records.

Many Thanks to the club members who did the work preparing the range and running the shoot. Thank you Roy, Marg, Alan, Robyn and Rod for help in the scoring room, and the ladies who kept everyone well fed and put on a selection of sumptuous hot-pots for Saturday night’s dinner.

A special thanks to all our sponsors including the great support we get from Inox Lubricants and the Childers ANZ Bank for the major cup trophies.

Jones Arrives on National Stage

Shane Jones from the Gympie Smallbore Rifle Club has arrived on the national shooting stage with a surprise performance at the Target Rifle Australia National Championships, held in Sydney over the Easter long weekend. On day 1 of the 50m Prone Rifle competition, Jones fired a personal best ‘raw’ score of 592 out of a possible 600 points. A score that saw him equal the ‘raw’ score produced that same day by Warren Potent, the current World Champion in this event who was shooting along side him just 1 lane away.

Jones continued this top form throughout the competition finishing 7th overall in the 50m Prone Rifle event with scores 616.1 and 613.1. He also finished 14th overall in the Dual Range Prone Rifle event with scores of 576 and 584. This was enough to see Shane selected in his first Lord Wakefield Cup team, which is the top 20 prone shooters in Australia.

Although his efforts at the nationals saw him record four of his five personal best scores and take many by surprise, Jones said the performance was no surprise to him. “I’ve been putting in a fair bit of training in the lead up to these nationals”, said Jones, who began a training routine at the beginning of the year which saw him training up to three times a week at the local smallbore range in Gympie with additional non-shooting dry-fire training and mental preparation being conducted at home. The result was a good reward for three months of hard work.

Fifteen year old Patrick Sullivan, also from the Gympie club and coached by Shane also contested the Nationals.  Sullivan had success in the graded competition, winning D-grade and also achieving a personal best ‘raw’ score of 580.
